Pre-Winter Tune-Up Checklist

Furnace or heat pump, all 15 checks, plus a written report.

  1. Thermostat test and calibration. The thermostat will be tested and calibrated to ensure it is sending correct signals to the HVAC system, and requesting the temperature specified.

  2. Air filter check or replacement. All air filters will be checked for cleanliness and replaced if they have become too dirty to allow proper airflow.

  3. Electrical connections, voltage, and amps. Loose wires are a common cause of breakdowns and can be a fire risk.

  4. Capacitors and contactor. The capacitors and contactors in the system will be examined to determine if they need to be replaced.

  5. Blower motor and wheel cleaning. The motors will be cleaned and oiled to ensure quiet fans and good airflow.

  6. Burners, flame sensor, and igniter (gas). The starter mechanisms of the gas furnace checked to ensure the furnace lights successfully every time.

  7. Heat exchanger inspection (gas). Integrity of the heat exchanger checked to ensure dangerous fumes like CO are not escaping.

  8. Gas pressure and leak check (gas). Pressures and gas lines tested for unsafe levels and/or gas leaks.

  9. Flue, venting, and carbon monoxide test (gas). All elements related to the evacuation of toxic fumes checked for safe venting.

  10. Safety switch testing. Safety switches checked for functionality in the event of system failures.

  11. Reversing valve, defrost, and backup heat (heat pump). Components to ensure steady heat flow checked for functionality and longevity.

  12. Refrigerant pressures and outdoor coil (heat pump). The heat pump unit checked for valid pressure readings and the coil checked for cleanliness.

  13. Condensate drain and pan. The condensate line and drain pan checked for proper drainage.

  14. Temperature rise and airflow. Change in temperature measured at air registers to assess efficiency of heating.

  15. Duct check. Ventilation ductwork checked for damage and restrictions.

Labor/Materials related to needed repairs not included.
